Tel Aviv, 14th March – the Members of the Israeli NOC Executive Board elected Igal Carmi as their President for the next four years at a board meeting held on Sunday 10th March.
Following 16 years at the helm, Zvi Varshaviak had announced that he would step down in January.
Mr. Efraim Zinger will continue in his position as NOC Secretary General.
At the press conference for the appointment, Carmi, 59, who is also the President & CEO of Tadiran Batteries, said, “We are embarking on a new road.” After thanking Varshaviak “who has done a lot for sport”, the new president said he intends making cooperation a key aspect of his tenure. ‘It is our responsibility to unite all the forces in the country and work together to promote sports in Israel.”
His first decision as president of the Israeli NOC was to set up a sports committee that will work in cooperation with Israel’s Elite Sport Department, and that will be headed by Barcelona 1992 judoka silver medalist Yael Arad, the first Israeli to win an Olympic medal.
