The Games, which took place in the sign of openness and multiculturality meeting in the Mediterranean basin, saw amazing results achieved by Europe. Italy placed on the top of the medal ranking with 156 medals in total (56 golds, 55 silvers, 45 bronze), followed by Spain with a total of 122 medals (38 golds, 40 silvers, 44 bronze), Turkey with 95 medals (31 golds, 25 silvers, 39 bronze) and France with 99 medals (28 golds, 31 silvers and 40 bronze).

10 intense days of competitions for the European countries and their neighbours (Algeria, Egypt, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syrian Arab Rep.) culminated in the big celebration of the Closing Ceremony of the XVIII Mediterranean Games in Tarragona, last 1 July.

Music was the protagonist of the Catalan event, which was also liven up by several dancing performances and, as in the Opening Ceremony, colourful fireworks.

The ceremony was chaired by Amar Addadi, President of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games, Josep Fèlix Ballesteros, President of the Organising Committee of the Mediterranean Games and Mayor of Tarragona, and Alejandro Blanco, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee.

It also featured Noureddine Boukhatem, Mayor of Oran, the Algerian city that will follow Tarragona in the organisation of the XIX Mediterranean Games. During the celebrations, the flag of the International Committee of the Mediterranean Games was indeed handed out to the Algerian representatives, who are already working for the next edition of the Games.
