The Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) and the Government of the Canary Islands have reached an agreement on eSports promotion. The agreement was signed by the NOC President, Alejandro Blanco, and the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo at Elder Museum in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on 30 July 2018.

The signing ceremony featured also representatives from the Spanish Videogames and eSports Federation (FEVES) and “eSports Talent Canarias”, a project that places the Canary Islands as the first Spanish Autonomous Municipality to promote this kind of initiative in this field and hand in hand with the Spanish Olympic Committee.

COE wants to follow the new trend set by the International Olympic Committee, which has recently had a first meeting with the biggest stakeholders in electronic sports for an in-depth analysis on this issue, with the aim of establishing a working group to explore how to interconnect Olympism with this new frontier.

“The Olympic Movement is stepping up its engagement with eSports because it recognises that they are played by millions of people of different ages”, said Blanco following the signature of the agreement.

The event also included a space where visitors could assist and experience eSports Games.
