In just 100 days, the Belarusian capital of Minsk will welcome 4,000 of the best athletes from around Europe as they compete for glory at the continent’s premier multi-sport event, the European Games.
This will be the 2nd edition of the European Games following their successful debut in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2015. The Games, featuring 15 Olympic and non-Olympic sports, will run from 21-30 June.
The Lighting of the Flame of Peace and start of the torch relay for Minsk 2019 will be held on 3 May in Rome, home of the EOC. The Flame of Peace will be brought to the top of Mont Blanc, the highest point in Western Europe, before travelling by road through Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland en route to Minsk for the Opening Ceremony on 21 June.
With preparations entering their final phase, local organisers will be hosting the third National Olympic Committee Open Day and a Communications Seminar for media experts from the 50 European NOCs and 15 European Sports Federations that will be participating at Minsk 2019.
The NOC Open Day is scheduled for 27-28 March and is aimed at providing Chefs de Mission and others with valuable information on topics from accommodation and transportation to doping control and medals ceremonies. The Communications Seminar, meanwhile, will be held in Minsk from 25-27 April and will cover press and photo operations, news services, social and digital media guidelines and broadcasting, among others. The Seminar will conclude with a visit to the Minsk Arena, where a test event for Artistic Gymnastics will be taking place.
With all venues ready to host the European Games, the final touches are being put on the facilities and elsewhere around Minsk.
The Minsk European Games Organising Committee (MEGOC) has received over 24,000 applications from people looking to volunteer at the Games. The deadline for submissions is the end of April, after which MEGOC will select 8,000 volunteers to work in more than 25 functional areas during Minsk 2019.
To commemorate 100 Days to Go, MEGOC and instant messaging platform Viber have created a free sticker pack featuring Minsk 2019 mascot Lesik the Fox. The stickers can be downloaded here for free using the Viber app.
