The very first World Urban Games (WUG) is set to take place in Budapest, Hungary on 13-15 September 2019.

This innovative multi-sport event offers athletes from an eclectic mix of different “urban” sports the opportunity to shine in major, international competitions.

Among the sport disciplines taking part in the World Urban Games, 3×3 basketball, BMX freestyle and breaking will all feature as part of the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic programs. The sports programme also includes Flying Disc Freestyle, Parkour and Roller Freestyle.

“I wish all our European athletes and their support crews the best of luck at these intriguing new events, which have every chance of catching on with the public and becoming permanent fixtures on the calendar in the years ahead,” said EOC President Janez Kocijančič.

Between one competition and another, there will be a number of demonstration events providing spectators of all ages and abilities opportunities to try out new sports, such as indoor rowing and laser run.

The games offer a multi-sport event that reflects our times, embracing global connectivity through digital technology and a love for the lifestyle and for the environment.

The WUG revitalized a whole area of Budapest – Nagyvásártelep (Market Hall) – originally built in the 1930s. The power of WUG is to create a legacy for extreme sports in Hungary and set a new way of organizing sport events by combining sports, music and culture into the fabric of the city.

About WUG

Powered by Global Association of International Federations (GAISF), the World Urban Games aims at becoming the ultimate global showcase for a new generation of urban sports. Held every two years, WUG will feature a wide range of sport competitions and demonstrations integrated with music, dance and urban culture.

One of the initiators and strongest supporters of this project was GAISF President Patrick Baumann, who tragically died last year during the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
