Alexandra Trusova, the 14-year-old Russian figure skater and winner of the 4th Piotr Nurowski Prize for Best European Young Winter Athlete, continues to add successes to her shining career.
Trusova won the women’s competition at 2019 Rostelecom Cup, the fifth figure skating Grand Prix event, overhauling two-time world champion Evgenia Medvedeva in Moscow on 16 November. The young Rising star upstaged the 2016 and 2017 world champion Medvedeva, finishing with a combined score of 234.47, qualifying for the ISU Gran Prix Final.
For Russia’s “quad queen”, it was a second senior Grand Prix victory having triumphed on her debut at this level in October at Skate Canada, where she set the new free skating record of 166.62 points and also the new combined total record of 241.02 points. She was also nominated for the ISU Skating Awards Best Newcomer award, with other four compatriots.
“I am very happy that I qualified for the ISU Grand Prix Final,” Trusova said. “However, I feel that I didn’t skate my best in the short and free skating and I will continue to work hard,” Trusova said.”
A member of the Russian national team since 2017, Trusova is a two-time Junior World Champion, two-time Russian Junior National Champion, the 2018 Junior Grand Prix Final runner up and the 2019 Russian national silver medallist.
Despite her young age, Trusova is already shattering records and changing the way skaters approach their programmes. She was the first figure skater to land two quads in a routine, the first female skater to land a quadruple Lutz, and the first to nail a quadruple toe loop.
