EOC Vice President Daina Gudzinevičiūtė attends 50th anniversary of Munich 1972 massacre

EOC Vice President Daina Gudzinevičiūtė took part in the commemoration for the 50th anniversary of the Munich 1972 Olympic Games massacre in Munich, Germany on 5 September 2022.

This year the Olympic Committee of Israel marked 50 years since the murder of the 11th members of the Israeli delegation during at Munich 1972.

A number of commemorative events were held both in Germany and in Israel to pay tribute to the victims and their families.

Gudzinevičiūtė attended two official ceremonies conducted by the German government: the first held at the Olympic Village with the bereaved families and the second held at the Fürstenfeldbruck airport.

“It is always very difficult to reflect on the memory of this tragic event,” said Gudzinevičiūtė. “The Munich 1972 massacre created a wound in the European Olympic Movement that will never be healed. At the EOC, we remain close to the families of the victims, and we will continue to be driven by our mission of inspiring peace and solidary through sport.”

In attendance were also other distinguished guests, including President of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the State of Israel Isaac Herzog and IOC President Dr Thomas Bach.
