EOC pays tribute to the late Jacques Rogge on his birthday

Categories: EOC

The European Olympic Committees (EOC) wishes to pay tribute to the late Count Jacques Rogge, our former President and the 8th International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, on what would have been his 81st birthday.

After serving as the President of the Belgium Olympic Committee, Count Rogge was named the EOC President in 1989 before becoming the IOC President in 2001, succeeding Juan Antonio Samaranch.

Count Rogge’s achievements during his time in charge of the EOC and the IOC were numerous.  However, it is through his commitment to supporting young athletes that his legacy will perhaps be best remembered. In 1991 as EOC President he was instrumental in the creation of the European Youth Olympic Festival, while during his time as IOC President he launched the Youth Olympic Games. His impact on youth sport will be felt for years to come.

The EOC is certain that Count Rogge would have enjoyed the forthcoming European Games, and would have been pleased to note the support of the European Union for this endeavour. Sport was always close to Count Rogge’s heart and as a leader who was the perfect embodiment of the Olympic Values, he remains deeply missed. The thoughts of all of us at the EOC are with Count Rogge’s family and friends.
