The official medals for the European Games Kraków-Małopolska 2023 have been unveiled ahead of the third edition of the continent’s premier multi-sport event.

Made by local jewellery brand Beller, in cooperation with the Polish designer Klaudia Gołaszczyk, the stunning medals mix modern design with Polish history and the traditions of the Małopolska region and will be treasured by the athletes who win them between 21 June and 2 July.

On the front of the medals, which have been made from recycled jewellery and electrical goods, the European Games logo is placed in the centre and surrounded by two symbolic, intertwined stars.

Each star is made up of six lines, symbolising the six-pointed highland rosette, the “flower of life”, which is a protective symbol that brings prosperity and protects against misfortune. The inter-connecting stars also represent the “We Are Unity” motto of these Games, as well as offering a subtle nod to lace embroidery, which is associated with Małopolska and the city of Koniaków – the Polish capital of traditional crafts.

On the reverse of the medal, there are three birds to represent Poland hosting the third edition of the European Games. The flock of three birds also symbolise equality, friendship and trust.

The eagle is the emblem of Poland and is known for strength, hope, leadership, victory, inspiration and courage, which are all values enshrined in the Olympic Movement, while the dove refers to the timeless ideas of peace and respect.

The medals were revealed at the Wieliczka Salt Mine at an event which saw the Flame of Peace Torch go underground for the first time.

Poland’s Deputy Minister of State Assests Andrzej Sliwka said: “It is an exceptional joy that we can meet in a place that is one of Poland’s showpieces. It is the perfect location to present the medals for which the athletes will be competing in a few days’ time, medals which symbolise and reward their toil and hard work.”

EOC President Spyros Capralos said: “We are all looking forward to the European Games and I know the unveiling of the medals will only increase excitement and help inspire the European athletes travelling to Poland. These medals are a tangible symbol of what they are striving for in these final days of preparation. They are also a perfect illustration of the responsible innovation and rich diversity of Polish culture that will infuse these Games.”
