European Olympic Committees (EOC) President Spyros Capralos and the EOC Executive Committee (ExCo) attended a celebratory event in Bucharest, marking 100 years since the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (ROSC) won its first Olympic Games medal.

Ahead of the EOC General Assembly taking place in the Romanian capital between 6 and 7 June, the opening of an exhibition and revealing of a commemorative jubilee coin came a century after the Romanian rugby team won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games Paris 1924.

The celebration took place at the prestigious Bank of Romania, where the temporary exhibition titled “A Different Kind of Treasure: The Champions of Romania” was unveiled. This exhibit pays homage to the country’s Olympic heroes and their remarkable achievements over the past 100 years.

President Capralos was joined by several distinguished guests, including Prince Radu of Romania, the Governor of the National Bank of Romania Mugur Isărescu, Head of the Chancellery Mihai Alexandru Ghigiu, ROSC President and EOC ExCo member Mihai Covaliu and IOC Member Octavian Morariu.

Rowing legend Elisabeta Lipă, the most decorated Olympic rower, was also in attendance, accompanied by 32 other Romanian Olympians, all celebrated for their contributions to their country’s rich history at the Games.

During his speech, President Capralos highlighted the enduring legacy of Romanian athletes and their impact on the Olympic Movement. He also praised the exhibition for showcasing the dedication and triumphs of Romania’s sports champions, emphasising the importance of remembering and honouring their achievements and history.

President Capralos said: “It is a truly special moment to be here today in the presence of such distinguished company, and to be joined by 33 of Romania’s great Olympians. On behalf of the EOC please accept our congratulations on the 100th anniversary of Romania’s first Olympic medal.

“Your country has a long and storied history in the Olympic Games with many great athletes, from President Lipă to the rugby side who represented Romania when they won the bronze medal in Paris 100 years ago

“The opening of the exhibition and release of the commemorative jubilee coin are important reminders of your success and will help inspire the next generation, alongside the first Olympic Games being held in Europe for 12 years in Paris next month.”
