Nominations open for Piotr Nurowski Prize – Best Summer Young European Athlete 2024

The European Olympic Committees (EOC) is inviting nominations for the 13th edition of the Summer Piotr Nurowski Prize (PNP) for Best European Young Athlete.

Each of the European National Olympic Committees (NOCs) can nominate a candidate from their country in conjunction with their Athletes’ Commission by the deadline of 29 November 2024.

The PNP is open to athletes born after 1 January 2006, taking into account their performances at the Olympic Games and World, regional or national Championships, along with conduct in the fields of fair play, Olympic culture and values and friendship.

The long list of nominations will be narrowed down to a shortlist of five, with three athletes voted for by European NOCs and two by a panel of experts. The winner will then be voted for by NOCs at the 54th EOC General Assembly in Frankfurt, Germany on 28 February 2025 and crowned at the official gala dinner that evening.

The 104 European athletes who have previously been shortlisted for the Summer or Winter edition of the PNP have gone on to win 42 Olympic and 151 World Championship medals, demonstrating the Prize’s consistent recognition of Europe’s brightest young talents.

Last year saw the Summer edition shared for the first time by German rhythmic gymnast Darja Varfolomeev, who won gold at the Olympic Games Paris 2024, and Turkish swimmer Kuzey Tunçelli. Slovakian judoka Patricia Tomankova came third, followed by Ukrainian diver Kirill Boliukh in fourth and Belgian taekwondo athlete Sarah Chaari in fifth.

Each of the five finalists will receive a training scholarship worth €15,000 for the winner, €8,000 for second place, €5,000 for third and €3,000 each for fourth and fifth.

The Prize was created in 2011, to remember and honour former President of the Polish Olympic Committee Piotr Nurowski, using his example and his memory to encourage young athletes to pursue a career in elite sport and inspire future generations to adopt a healthy lifestyle based on the Olympic ideals and principles.
