Hungarian Márton named 13th winner of summer Piotr Nurowski Prize

The European Olympic Committees [EOC] is delighted to announce Hungarian taekwondo athlete Viviana Márton as the winner of the 13th Summer Piotr Nurowski Prize.

Awarded at a Gala Dinner during the 54th EOC General Assembly in Frankfurt, Márton received 57.14% of the votes from the European National Olympic Committees [NOC] following her stunning gold medal at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.

Márton, now 19, produced one of the shocks of Paris 2024 when she beat Serbia’s Aleksandra Perišić to win the Olympic gold medal in the women’s -67kg category as an 18-year-old.

It was Hungary’s first-ever Olympic taekwondo medal and saw her beat two-time Olympic bronze medallist Ruth Gbagbi and Belgium’s 2022 world champion Sarah Chaari, a former Piotr Nurowski Prize finalist, en-route to the final.

In joint-second place were Italian artistic gymnast Manila Esposito and French table tennis player Felix Lebrun, with Dominika Banevic (Lithuania – breaking) and Helen Kevric (Germany – artistic gymnastics) in fourth and fifth respectively

Each of the five finalists of this prestigious prize will win training scholarships to support their development. For Márton, this training scholarship will value €15,000, Esposito and Lebrun will receive €8,000 each with the fourth and fifth-place athletes both earning €3,000.

During the General Assembly, the EOC Order of Merit award was given to Honorary International Tennis Federation President, former IOC Member and former ASOIF President Francesco Ricci Bitti for his services to the Olympic Movement in Italy, Europe and the world.

The Piotr Nurowski Prize

The Piotr Nurowski Prize was created by the EOC in 2010 to remember Olympic great Piotr Nurowski, the former President of the Polish Olympic Committee. Through his example and his memory, it encourages young athletes to pursue a career in top-class sport, as well as inspiring future generations to adopt a healthy lifestyle based on Olympic values and principles. It takes into account an athletes’ performance during the Winter EYOF and other major events, and given equal importance is their conduct during events and their engagement with Olympic culture, values and friendship.
