17TH ANOC GENERAL ASSEMBLY WORKS COMMENCED WEDNESDAY

Acapulco, 20 October from Wednesday till Friday of this week the representatives of the worlds 205 NOCs will be together for the 17th General Assembly of their Association to discuss a particularly full agenda.

This will also be an opportunity to get the latest on preparations for London 2012, Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016, and hear the final report for the Singapore 2010 YOG.

The delegates will likewise be receiving presentations from the 2018 Olympic Winter Games candidates, Annecy, Munich and Pyeongchang. Due to take place on Thursday, this will be a key event for these three cities, and the first of a series of presentations that will lead to the final selection in Durban (RSA) 6 July 2011.

Acapulco will also give each continent a podium from which to give a report on its activities and talk about its priorities.

EOC President Patrick Hickey, will be speaking for Europe and will focus on the anti-obesity programme run in conjunction with TOP sponsor Samsung. He will also be telling delegates about the feasibility study for a European Games, the initial results of which are most positive, and the will of the EOC to work in full and close collaboration with the Sports Federations. He will further talk about the EOCs close collaboration with the EU for the preservation of the autonomy of sport and the work of the EOC EU Office in Brussels.

Acapulco will also witness the renewal of the ANOC Executive Board.

Don Mario Vazquez Raña, at the helm of the Association for the last thirty years, is the only candidate for President will thus be confirmed.

For the occasion, he illustrated the Associations activities in an interview for the online magazine “Around the Rings” – www.aroundtherings.com to be published in a special issue for Acapulco in three languages.

The Acapulco meeting will also be particularly festive due to the special atmosphere there will be thanks to the celebrations for the bicentenary of Mexicos independence.
