3RD IOC COURSE ON THE PERIODIC HEALTH EVALUATION OF ELITE ATHLETES ORGANISED IN ROME

Rome, 20th June 2014 two days before the celebrations for its centenary, the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) hosted the 3rd IOC Course on the Periodic Evaluation Health Evaluation Of Elite Athletes, organised by the IOC and CONI’s Medical Commission.

The course, run in cooperation with the CONI Medical and Sports Institute, took place at the Hall of Honours at the CONI HQ in the Foro Italico, in the presence of numerous personalities from the worlds of sport, medicine and science.

The meeting opened with an address given by prof Lars Einghebresen, who heads the IOC’s scientific activities.

Dr Klaus Steinbach, who is EOC Chief medical Officer, gave a talk on the EOC’s position regarding the safeguard of elite athletes’ health and wellbeing.

The participants were also given reports by Italian and European experts on a range of medical subjects, including diagnostics, with particular reference to cardiovascular problems that elite athletes can incur.

In closing the event, CONI President Giovanni Malagò, and IOC Member and EOC Honorary President Mario Pescante expressed their pride at having been allowed to host such a prestigious event together with the CONI Medical and Sports Institute, a top class facility that has worked for sport for half a century.
