EOC EU Office to host roundtable on Gender Equality in Sports

The European Olympic Committees (EOC) EU Office will host a digital roundtable on Gender Equality in Sport during European Week of Sport on 26 September 2023.

Spain currently holds the rotating Presidency of the Council of the EU and put gender equality in sport high on its political agenda. In this context, the panel will focus on the the Olympic Movement’s initiatives and the EOC EU Office’s activities, including the EU-funded Project GAMES concerning gender equality in sport.

Barbara Fuertes Gonzalez, the Deputy Director General, Higher Sports Council, Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport, Annamarie Phelps, Chair of the EOC Gender Equality and Diversity (GEDI) Commission and Carlotta Giussani Project Manager GAMES Project and Funding Officer EOC EU Office will all offer their expertise and unique angle on this transversal topic.

Ms Gonzalez will focus on the priorities of the Spanish Presidency of the EU for gender equality during their six months in office, while Ms Phelps will provide an overview of the GEDI Commission’s work and the main challenges they face.

The final presentation will come from Ms Giussani, who will explain the GAMES Project and present the National Action-plans for advancing gender equality in leadership positions in sport developed by the National Olympic Committees opin the framework of the GAMES project.

Director of the EOC EU Office Folker Hellmund reiterated the importance of continuing the fight for gender equality in sport ahead of the roundtable.

Hellmund said: “Throughout the European Olympic Family we continue to make great strides as we strive for gender equality at all levels of sport, we know there is still plenty of work to be done.

“Sharing experiences and learning is an important way of ensuring progress does not stop and I know that all three speakers at our roundtable’s expertise will prove useful for everyone who attends.”
