European Olympic Committees (EOC) President Spyros Capralos today met with President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and Chair of the World Aquatics Championships – Doha 2024, His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani.
World Aquatics’ flagship event is being held in the Middle East for the first time between 2 and 18 February and President Capralos, who represented Greece in water polo at the Olympic Games in 1980 and 1984, travelled to Doha to watch the action, with swimming, high diving and water polo finals taking place this week.
The EOC President met with H.E. Sheikh Joaan at the QOC’s headquarters, where they discussed the World Aquatics Championships, the upcoming Olympic Games Paris 2024 and Qatar’s continued commitment to hosting sporting events in the region.
President Capralos praised Doha as a venue for the World Aquatics Championships and the performances of European athletes at the competition.
He said: “It has been fantastic to attend the first World Aquatics Championships in Doha and to watch some of Europe’s best aquatics athletes in action, including the Greek water polo teams. It is clear that European nations will be near the top of the aquatic sports medal tables in Paris at the Olympic Games.
“It was an honour to meet with Sheikh Joaan in Doha and to witness the excellent job that Doha has done hosting this prestigious event. The facilities that they have provided to the athletes have allowed them to perform to their best and allowed for exciting competitions.”
