EOC supports ninth edition of European Week of Sport

The ninth edition of the European Week of Sport (EWoS) will be officially launched in Valencia on 23 September 2023.

The European Olympic Committees (EOC) is pleased to continue its support for the EWoS, an EU Commission initiative, and its continued focus of encouraging all Europeans to embrace an active and healthy lifestyle.

Figures show that the level of physical activity in Europe is stagnating in many countries and EWoS’ #BeActive campaign, which was officially launched on International Olympic Day on 23 June, is a response to this.

The focus for 2023 is on promoting involvement, inclusion and innovation in sport with the aim of beating the impressive figures from the 2022 EWoS, which saw 40 countries take part, 32,800 events held and more than 13 million participants.

After a conference on Safe Environment in Sport on 22 September, the EWoS will officially be launched on 23 September at the Caixa Fòrum where the Spanish Minister of Culture and Sport Pío Cabanillas Gallas, President of the Consejo Superior de Deportes Victor Francos Diaz and Margaritis Schinas, Vice-President of the European Commission for Promoting our European Way of Life will make speeches.

EOC President Spyros Capralos thanked the EU Commission for their continued work and emphasised the importance of their messaging ahead of EWoS kicking off.

President Capralos said: “The European Week of Sport continues to spread an important message about the benefits of living an active and healthy lifestyle. We know that doing exercise has a positive impact on everyone’s health and it is concerning to see figures that say the levels of activity are stagnating, or even decreasing, in many European countries.

“We must all follow the EU Commission’s lead this September and promote the benefits of sport, encourage people to get involved and ensure that sport in Europe is a welcoming and inclusive place.

“#BeActive is a fantastic campaign and I will be making sure to take time out to exercise this European Week of Sport!”
