Europe at the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 – Facts & Figures

With the curtains closed on the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022, European NOCs returned home with a haul of 227 medals (80 gold, 73 silver, 74 bronze), roughly 70% of the overall number of medals, registering an increase of +8% compared to PyeongChang 2018.

22 out of the 29 NOCs on the medal table are European, with Norway topping the list (16 gold, 8 silver, 13 bronze), followed by Germany (12 gold, 10 silver, 5 bronze), Sweden (8 gold, 5 silver, 5 bronze) and Netherlands (8 gold, 5 silver and 4 silver).

The sports in which European athletes were most successful winning the majority of the available medals are: biathlon (100%), alpine skiing (94%), cross-country skiing (94%), ski jumping (80%) Nordic combined (78%), Curling (78%).

The top three multi-medallists are all European:

BOE Johannes Thingnes        NOR    BIATHLON (4 gold, 1 bronze)

BOLSHUNOV Alexander         ROC CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING (3 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze)

ROEISELAND Marte Olsbu      NOR    BIATHLON (3 gold, 2 bronze)

 

Many are the European athletes who used the European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) as a springboard for their careers and excelled both at the EYOF and at the Olympic Games, winning a gold medal at both events:
