The Winter European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF) Vuokatti 2022 showcased the best young talent from across the continent. With records broken on and off the field of play throughout the week, let’s take a look at the numbers behind what was an unforgettable event!
National Olympic Committees (NOCs)
46 NOCs gathered in the Finnish city for a celebration of sport
- Athletes from 13 NOCs won gold medals
Athletes
- Including the boy’s ice hockey in December 2021, 932 athletes competed in the EYOF
- There were 494 boys and 438, representing a near 50:50 gender split
- 25 young athletes from Ukraine acted as role models for the whole of Europe. They were supported by 2 Chefs de Mission, 12 coaches and 1 doctor
Coaches
52 young coaches from 10 countries and 20 different sports took part in “The Modern Coach Seminar” supported by Erasmus +
Sports Programme
- From the mountains, to the ice rink, athletes showcased their excellence in 9 sporting disciplines
- 39 different events featured throughout the week
Ambassadors and Volunteers
- 20 individuals participated in the European Young Olympic Ambassador (EYOA) programme, promoting the Olympic Values to athletes competing at the EYOF
- Over 1,000 volunteers supported the outstanding Vuokatti 2022 Organising Committee

- Media coverage in 25+ countries
- 45 participants on the Erasmus + Youth Media Camp (19 Finnish and 26 international)

- The total Reach of EYOF-related social media activity was 32 billion
- The number 1 used hashtag was #eyofvuokatti2022
- The top NOC tweeter was the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) with 31 tweets

Perhaps the most important number is the one referenced by EOC President Spyros Capralos in his Closing Ceremony speech, when he praised the young athletes for embodying the 3 Olympic Values of excellence, friendship, and respect. Above all, this is the purpose of the EYOF and the participants of Vuokatti 2022 made their NOCs and the EOC proud.
