Former Summer Piotr Nurowski Prize (PNP) winner Yaroslava Mahuchikh and Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis have been named the 2024 European Athletes of the Year by European Athletics.
Ukrainian Mahuchikh won the summer PNP, awarded by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) to Europe’s best young athlete, in 2019 after winning the World Championship silver medal in high jump.
She has continued to enjoy success at the top level and won the Olympic gold medal in Paris this summer, shortly after breaking the women’s world record, which had stood for 37 years, with a leap of 2.10m at a Diamond League event in Paris. .
Duplantis, meanwhile, continues to dominate the men’s pole vault and produced one of the standout track and field moments of Paris 2024 when he broke the world record for a 10th with a jump of 6.25m at the Stade de France. It is a record he has already broken since the Games.
European Athletics held the Golden Tracks award night in Skopje, North Macedonia on 26 October, where the 2025 Summer European Youth Olympic Festival will be held as athletes from across the continent look to emulate Mahuchikh and Duplantis.
