It took nine years, but the quartet of Andrew Steele, Rob Tobin, Michael Bingham and Martyn Rooney have now officially become Olympic medallists, having been moved up from fourth to third after Russia’s disqualification, after retrospective testing of urine samples found that anchor runner Denis Alekseyev had used a banned substance.

The quartet were awarded their 4x400m relay bronze medal on Sunday 9th July at The Müller Anniversary Games – one of the best athletics events in the world  playing host to the superstars of the sport – were greeted to a rousing reception inside the London Stadium in front of a cheering British crowd and live on the BBC.

The team had finished fourth on the night at Beijing 2008, running a season’s best but finishing just behind the Russian four, who were subsequently banned for anti-doping offences.

The reallocation of the medal means all four Brits have now won their first Olympic medal and it takes Team GB’s Beijing 2008 tally to 48.

Sir Hugh Robertson, Chairman of the British Olympic Association said: “These four Team GB athletes missed the opportunity to celebrate their extraordinary achievement surrounded by their family, friends and Team GB fans in Beijing.  Now, we are delighted to be able to present their medals at such a prestigious event, in front of a home crowd.”
