European Parliament Committee Votes on Anti-Doping Proposal
During its session on 14 March 2005, the European Parliament Committee for Culture and Education responsible for Sport voted on a proposal for fighting against doping.
The European Parliament calls upon the European Commission to conduct an effective and integrated policy in the area of public health, prevention, education and pharmaceutical research. With the 7th research framework programme, research about various methods of testing and controlling doping should be promoted. Information campaigns supported by the commission should promote an effective prevention policy. The cooperation between the member states and the Commission with the WADA should be strengthened so that the EU can act effectively in the prevention and control of illegal drug-taking.
The plenary session of the European Parliament still has to vote on the proposal.
EU Platform for Action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health
On 15 March 2005, the European Commission set up the platform for action on Diet, Physical Activity and Health. This EU platform unites federations of industries, consumer protection associations, health NGOs and political decision-makers to discuss voluntary actions in the areas of consumer information and enlightenment, marketing and advertising, promoting physical activity, the composition of foodstuffs and sizes of portions together. The increasing problem of obesity in children and adults in Europe should be countered.
Obesity is a risk factor for many serious diseases such as cardio-pulmonary disease, strokes, arthritis and special types of cancer. About 2% to 8% of the healthcare costs can be traced back to the problem of obesity.
