MESSAGE FROM EOC PRESIDENT – JULY 2022

Categories: EOC

Dear Colleagues,

Dear Friends,

After two very challenging years for the European Olympic Movement, July gave us hope and optimism that sport will continue to bring positivity, peace, and unity to our continent.

After a magical Winter European Youth Olympic Festival in Finland back in March, the attention turned to the summer edition in Slovakia. Our high expectations were not only met, but exceeded, as we witnessed Europe’s young stars shine in Banska Bystrica.

My sincere thanks and praise go to our friends in Slovakia, who delivered on all fronts. From the warm hospitality, to the outstanding venues – everything throughout the week was of the highest quality.

The European athletes set records, created memories, and made friendships that will last long into the future. They made their countries proud and I hope they can use this experience to drive them towards their Olympic dreams.

There were so many standout moments that is hard to single out just one, but I think special praise should be reserved for the outstanding Ukrainian delegation. The reception they received from the crowd at the Opening Ceremony is a reflection of Europe’s unity with Ukraine, and to see their 46 young athletes competing and winning medals throughout the week filled us all with pride.

Ukraine’s delegation received support from across Europe, to ensure their athletes were ready to fulfil their potential. This collaborative effort was a reminder that the EYOF is about much more than just sport. Indeed, for most athletes it was their first experience at a multisport event, and it forms an integral part of their development on and off the field. With the support of our dedicated volunteers and passionate European Young Olympic Ambassadors, the EYOF was once again a platform for our continent’s future stars to learn about the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.

We left Slovakia with many fond memories and added excitement for the winter and summer editions next year in Friuli Venezia Giulia and Maribor. We wish both organising committees the best of luck with their ongoing preparations – we cannot wait to see what lies in store!

After a busy summer, August will hopefully bring you all a period of rest and relaxation, allowing you to recharge your batteries for the busy months ahead.

Thank you all for making Europe shine.

With best EurOlympic greetings,

Spyros Capralos
