NOC OF ICELAND MOURNS PRESIDENT

Categories: Misc.

Reykjavik, 20th June – The National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland was shocked and saddened at the news of the sudden and unexpected death of their President, Olafur Rafnsson, whilst on a trip to Geneva, Switzerland, to attend the official opening of FIBA’s new headquarters.

Aged 50, he had been elected President of the Icelandic NOC in 2006, and had also been president of FIBA Europe since 2010.

A lawyer with his own law firm, Olafur was a former basketball player and, as a member of the Haukar team, won the Icelandic Championship in 1988.

The EOC will treasure the memory of this dynamic Olympic leader, who in Reykjavik in January 2012 hosted an EOC executive committee meeting on occasion of the celebrations for the NOCs 100th anniversary.

The European Olympic Committees extend their heartfelt condolences to the NOC and his family.
