With one month left to go to the opening of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, the media are full of positive news about the two Koreas starting formal talks.

As “Francs Jeux” puts it “It’s done”. One month from the opening of the 2018 PyeongChang Games, writes the French-speaking sports magazine, North Korea has demonstrated that the Olympic Truce is not just an empty concept. After an intense half-day of talks at the Panmunjom Peace House on Tuesday, January 9th, its representatives indeed agreed to send a delegation of athletes to the next Winter Games.

A few hours later, according to the Yonhap News Agency South Korea proposed that the two countries parade together during the opening and closing ceremonies, under the banner of a unified Korea. For its part, North Korea announced that they will send a high level team to the Games.

Media also note that the International Olympic Committee is ready to extend the deadline for the registration of North Korean athletes, and that it is planning more talks with all sides.

Meanwhile, the Olympic Flame is travelling across South Korea in view of the 9th February Opening Ceremony. The Relay aims to promote values of ‘compassion and respect’, and to ignite the flame of ‘hope and determination’ in all citizens.

This too is the Olympic spirit.
