PIOTR NUROWSKI PRIZE – Record candidatures received for 2020 Winter Best Athlete Award

1 April 2020

The EOC has received a record number of candidatures for the 5th Winter Piotr Nurowski Prize (PNP) “Best Young European Athlete”.

All of the nominees competed in the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020, where Europe’s young stars collected roughly 70 per cent of the overall medals.

This year, the selection procedure has been slightly modified, with the 50 NOCs of Europe nominating just three candidates (instead of five). The two other candidates will then be nominated by a panel of experts comprising the EOC President, the Vice-President, the Secretary General, the Treasurer, the Chair of the Athletes’ Commission and the Sports Director.

While the deadline for the final nominations remains the same, 30 April 2020, the award ceremony will be held on a suitable occasion at a later date, due to the postponement of the EOC 2020 Seminar.

The winner takes home a € 15.000 training scholarship, the second and third place €8,000 and €5,000 respectively, whilst the fourth and fifth will both receive €3,000.

The annual prize is awarded to young, up-and-coming athletes that over the past years have showcased not only outstanding sporting achievements, but also exceptional conduct on and off the field of play. It was created in memory of former President of the Polish Olympic Committee Piotr Nurowski who tragically died in 2010 in a plane crash.

Last year’s winter prize went to 14-year-old Russian figure skater Alexandra Trusova, who continues to accumulate successes to her brilliant career.
