President Capralos encourages Europeans to #BeActive on kick-off of European Week of Sport 2022!

Categories: EOC

Dear Friends

Today marks the kick off of the European Week of Sport!

This is a special chance for Europe to come together and BE ACTIVE!

The European Week of Sport is an annual event, initiated by the European Commission, aimed at promoting active and healthier lifestyles to millions of people in Europe and beyond. In 2021 more than 11 million people took part.

This year our focus is on youth. The EOC is inviting all our friends across the European Olympic Movement to join us in celebrating the joy of being active.

Time is now! We know that the pandemic caused levels of physical activity to decline. Many good habits were lost. Now we must start again to encourage people, especially young people, to find the active habits that will help them live happy, healthy lives.

We know that 3 out of 4 teenagers do not meet the global recommendations for physical activity set by WHO, of 60 minutes of activity per day.

This is our challenge and our opportunity. Together we can work towards a more active future.

The EOC will be leading several initiatives. Our European Youth Olympic Ambassadors will compete against each other to engage young people on social media. Our Athletes’ Commission will give online masterclasses. And even our own Executive Committee taking part in a relay in Greece next week.

These #BeActive messages will also be emphasized and spread by the hosts of our future events – the European Games Krakow Malopolska 2023 and the EYOFs in Friuli Venezia Giulia and Maribor – through social media.

We hope our initiatives will encourage you to get involved and be a part of the European Week of Sport.

Go out there, be active, stay active! Invite a friend, a colleague or a family member with you. And most importantly – have fun!
