PYEONGCHANG 2018: SPORT FOR PEACE

Categories: Misc.

5 January 2018

With 34 days to go to the Opening Ceremony, the 2018 Winter Olympic Games are making headlines across the media, not just for the fantastic organisation, the great ticket sales or the expectations of the participating athletes and their fans from all over the world, but also for what the Olympics seem to make possible.

For the first time in more than two years government officials from North and South Korea will resume contacts, and meet in the border town of Panmunjom for talks. The main theme will be North Korea’s participation in the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, in South Korea in February, following Kim Jong-Un’s opening to the idea.

The news is encouraging. An opinion poll conducted 2 days ago reveals that a large majority of South Koreans favour the participation of a delegation from North Korea at PyeongChang 2018. Over three quarters of those interviewed polled favourably; suggesting that the South Korean neighbour’s presence at the Games could reduce tension and help resume dialogue.

Will the general belief that Sport will work for Peace one more time prove true? We all look forward to it!
