SWEDEN – A LONG OLYMPIC DAY

Categories: Misc.

Stockholm, October 16, 2016

This year’s Olympic Days in Sweden are now completed, and it is time to summarize a fun year – the official NOC website informs, saying: “The year started already on January 8 in the Northern region of Piteå and it was a good start, followed by a short pause before it was time to start the winter holiday tour. It was a fun, but an intense period where we had twelve Olympic Days”.

The tour began with a few days in the Stockholm area to then move on up to Åre, Sälen Hassela. After finishing school, the winter tour continued to work on planning for spring and autumn Olympic Days.

In May it was time to take to the roads once again. A number of school days were carried out before it was time for the next big event – an Olympic Day on the coast in Malmö. Fully 30 compounds were present and showed off parts of Malmö’s fantastic range of sports. Malmö was at its absolute best with brilliant sunshine and 25-30 degrees all three days. The good weather brought big crowds to the event, which was great to see.

In July there was the Olympic Day holiday, then it was time for Sunshine Days with an Olympic Day in the Royal Garden in early August, just ready for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics opening with footage from the Olympics on the big screen in Kungsträdgården. Some 15 sports clubs and NOC partners offered fun activities for visitors.

“This is the fifth year that, together with the City of Stockholm, we organize Sunshine Days with an Olympic Day, and it’s always fun to come back here to Kungsan”, says Nathalie Larsson, project manager of Olympic Day.

After the intense period of the Olympic Games in Rio, more Olympic Days ended this year’s Olympic Day tour on 1 to 2 October at Liseberg. It was a good end to the season with many happy visitors and fantastic October weather!

Some figures from the year:
Number of days: 41
Number of participating children: 25 000
Number of participating parents: 10 000
Number of participating associations: 400
Number of participating association leaders: about 2500

These figures mean that over 100 000 children have now been at an Olympic Day since the event started in 2011!
