Sofia Goggia is the first Italian woman to win the women’s downhill competition, considered the most prestigious at an Olympic Winter Games, beating Lindsey Vonn (USA) who is considered the best female skier of all time.

The 25-year-old confirmed her status of best skier of the category this season – leading the World Cup downhill standings with two wins – followed by the Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel (silver) and the American Vonn (bronze), who skied for the last time at this OG.

Not only is it an extraordinary success for Goggia, but also it is the first time after 16 years that an Italian skier wins the Olympic downhill.

“We are extremely proud”, stated Giovanni Malagò, President of the Italian NOC, who attended the competition at the Alpine centre of Jeongseon, stressing the pride of the entire country.
